Machining Brake Rotors

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

We are asked all the time “is it worth machining my old brake rotors” our answer to this is yes!

Machining a brake rotor

In Orillia we machine brake rotors all the time on our FMC  brake lathe we turn your rotors and save you money. When you own a full size truck like a Ford f150 or a 1500 series GMC or maybe a newer car with a pulsation  and the rotors cost over a $100.00 or more why not spend $60.00 or so on pads $50.00 on machining $60.00 labour  total $170…$200   on a front brake job and knowing it’s going to last 30 to 50 thousand kms only because this is the second time round for those poor brake rotors and  brake calipers!

Some of the newer SUV for example a Dodge Journey the Brakes are only lasting for 40 or 50 thousand kms anyway and if you pulling a pop up trailer or something that number can be even lower. Here at Greg the Mechanic we have a good idea of what our customers would like us to do for them. We can save you some money and keep you safe!

Service The Rear Brakes Get a Better Brake Pedal

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Rear drum brakes need servicing once a year or so to keep your brake system at its best.

Dust builds up and causes squeeks rust grows on the brake drums  and scrapes the backing plate causing nasty noises no one wants.

At Greg The Mechanic we service so many rear brakes we made a video about it and put it up on our brake page .

This video shows us cleaning and servicing the rear brakes of a big truck , with rear brakes, this video applies to drum brakes for cars or trucks and works for most vechiles so check it out and have better brakes .

One of the most important we do in this video is grind of the big ridge that builds up on the outside of the brake drum.

Replace Seized Calipers

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Calipers Apply the brake pads to the Rotors always being used getting hot and cold.

Its hard to say how long they last some people are easy on there brakes some people like to use there brakes and turn those rotors a bit blue no mater which one of these people you are a seized  caliper has a couple of warning signs.

You might get some bad smells from the tire being affected, squeaking, pulling to one side, pad getting worn uneven or too quickly.

A bad caliper needs to be replaced its not a  hard job on most cars, half hour each caliper would be plenty of time at Greg The Mechanic On many cars and trucks the brake hose is held in place by a steel bracket as seen in the photo.

Well I’m going to give you a tip RUST GROWS  in these brackets and Blocks the Flow of brake fluid.

I have opened these brackets many times and found the caliper is not the problem but the rust growing on the bracket is so before paying for new calipers make sure the hoses work to supply those calipers with the fluid they need.

Brake Pads And Rotors Installed For Sixty Bucks

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Sixty Bucks is Greg’s price bring your parts or buy His and he will replace your front or rear brake pads and rotors for sixty bucks Its a great deal and he’s proud of it!

That squeak you hear in the rear brakes might be some service needed on the rear drum brakes a good cleaning , some rust removal lubing  where the brake shoes slide and adjusting is a good idea from time to time.

The brake pedal shaking under your foot and your wheel shaking in your hand coming off the highway sounds like those brake rotors might be warped. Its a good thing Greg replaces them for a fair price with good parts.
